02.01.2024

In October-December 2023, representatives from local self-government bodies that participate in project «Support of local waste management system» have learned about efficient waste management. Team of NGO «Ekoltava», under support of USAID project «HOVERLA», has conducted an online course at School of municipal waste management. Lectures and practical training sessions for project participants were held by top Ukrainian experts in waste management: Yuliya Makovetska, Viktor Hudenets, Tetiana Omelyanenko, and Dmytro Laznenko

During three months, the students have learned how to plan waste management system on local level, how to develop local plans, what requires attention in establishment of system’s technical and financial aspect.

«Training was held at a high level, the planned topics were covered, lecturers conveyed the material in a comprehensive way. We utter our big gratitude to the organizers. The module I liked best spoke about technical aspects of planning waste management system, and calculation of quantitative indicators. As with completed models one can suitably make required calculations and plan one’s future waste management system», – says Head, department of housing services, traffic, improvement, and communal property, Rokytnivska council, Serhiy Novak.

The participants of School have also received a chance to broaden their skills of effective waste management, by attending extra lectures.

«Me personally took a lot of useful data for myself. I have been working in Hoshchanska council for three months. I started from a scratch and actually found it hard to keep up. But School explained me a lot. Thanks to the training we’ve done great works: monitoring of waste management in starostat districts; reportages about landfills and sorting; setting forth the tasks before local self-government bodies and hromada so as to implement proper sorting, pick-out of valuable resources and many more; planning the meeting with heads of Slavutska hromada to obtain the experience in solid municipal waste management», – main specialist, department of hromada development, Hoshchanska council, Zhanna Holubieva.

During the following months, participants of School of MWM will use their brand new knowledge in practice. They will design roadmaps that become a basis for local waste management plans of their hromadas.

We remind that project «Support of local waste management system» lasts since summer 2023 and is to improve local self-government bodies’ competence in efficient management of municipal waste. Its participants are 65 hromadas of seven Ukrainian regions: Poltavska, Rivnenska, Zhytomyrska, Volynska, Lvivska, Zakarpatska, and Odeska. Though, theoretical lectures in School of MWM are open for comers from Kharkivska, Sumska, Mykolayivska, Khmelnytska, Chernihivska regions.
