Reasons for why Ukrainian hromadas have to undergo green reconstruction

19.07.2022

It has been some five months of russian war against Ukraine attended with destruction of cities and villages, and ecocide of Ukrainian nature. After full-scale invasion hundreds of ecological atrocities were documented, their cost runs into tens of millions dollars, and restoration will take over 10 years.

After Ukrainian victory, a huge amount of work will have to be completed to rebuild demolished areas. Though the worldwide resource crisis, climate and energy turmoils grant Ukraine a chance for large post-war reconstruction that goes in line with green principles, that is, the principles of the European Green Deal (EGD).

A working team has been summoned in Ukraine, but discussions between politicians and publicity concerned the areas of the Deal.

EGD is a road map of activities pointed at maintaining sustainability and competitiveness of EU economics, and making it climate-neutral by 2050. This includes living in harmony with the planet and its riches, building and renovation, sustainable industry, agricultural policy, sustainable mobility, decreased pollution and increased biodiversity.

EGD is in the first place for economics – replacement of outdated equipment, implementation of energy-efficient technologies and so forth. This means long-run steps and changes, not those temporary or one-shot.

Green deal is a key strategy for further development of Ukraine and country’s post-war reconstruction, agreed by politicians and publicity as well.

Ekoltava has started working on a road map for the Green reconstruction of Poltava region. What energy sector, housing and communal sector, waste management, mobility, environmental policy should look like?
