Finland is appealed to ban Russian gas

14.04.2022

Ekoltava together with Ukrainian environmental organizations Ekoklub, Ekodiya and Coalition “Energy transition” demand Finnish government to stop buying Russian gas. A lot of European companies proceed their business in aggressor country and thus finance the war in Ukraine.

On April, 13 there took place an online meeting with officials from department of corporate management, Finnish Prime Minister office, where there was discussed inadmissibility of any cooperation with russia, particularly there was mentioned “Fortum”, a company that continues to buy Russian fossils. “Fortum” and “Uniper”, its subsidiary, have 11 power stations in russia powered by natural gas and a station on brown coal. These facilities produce heat, steam and electricity for Russian cities and plants, including those involved in oil and gas industry. Mentioned companies belong to European biggest importers of Russian natural gas. Both «Fortum» and «Uniper» have announced they will not conclude updated contracts with russia, but current contracts are still far from expiration. Thus, gas import lasts at least till 2030. Along with that, «Fortum» uses Russian nuclear fuel for Finnish power stations «Loviisa-1» and «Loviisa-2» and does not state the change of provider. Besides, «Fortum» and «Gasum», a company of completely Finnish property, support the war through gas import. «Gasum» imports traditional and liquid methane, and does not claim the halt of this activity.

So, Russian budget is still funded, and this money is spent on destruction, atrocity and massacre of hundreds of Ukrainians.

“We must not get used to war in Ukraine! Please don’t ignore thousands of innocent victims, tortured and raped women and children. What will outweight – human lives or economic welfare? We, the Ukrainians, hope that governments and businesses stick to the former – human lives. We appeal to Finnish government to ban Russian fossils as fast as possible, so this war ends not in a year or a day, but this instant!”, – claimed Yuliya Mel’nyk, CEO, NGO “Ekoltava”.

Only united efforts bring us to the end of this murderous war and save millions of lives.
