Citizens of Poltava got rid of their disposable bags

An ecological installation «A bag of bags full of bags» took place within the sixth urban cultural festival «CITY WORKSHOP 2021» «TOGETHER, NOT ALONE».

As we already know the law «On abridgement of plastic bags circulation within Ukraine» was recently passed. It demands compulsory labelling for biodegradable bags according to national standards, and the installation is called to inform publicity about alternative solutions. 

There is more to that. Food stored in plastic spoils and grows mouldy faster. Frozen polyetylene emits toxins. Heating semi-products in their original packaging is especially dangerous, as scientists have proved that high temperature causes plastic to discharge formaldehyde, a toxic gas.

«A bag of bags full of bags» is an interactive installation called to:

– attract public attention in Poltava to the problem of superfluous household use of plastic bags;

– inform on eco-friendly, durable alternatives.

The action took place in city centre (near Hohol theater).

The installation itself was a bag filled with bags. We suggested people to get rid of discarded bags by throwing them in, what they willingly did.

«Eco-Memo» was being played nearby, children and adults as well. This game explains in practice how to segregate wastes. The collected bags were sorted and taken to recycling point in Poltava and further to recycling namely. While sorting we’ve found «rustlers», book protective coverings and other non-recyclable plastic. This proves that most people are unaware of proper segregation and recycling.

Therefore actions of a kind are necessary indeed! They show the example of environmentally aware behaviour, remind of the problem of pollution and excess use of bags. Complete refusal is still a distant achievement, yet the journey has begun!
