585 containers for separated waste collection installed in Ukrainian hromadas

12.02.2024

NGO «Ekoltava», within the project «Support of local waste management system», implemented under support from USAID project «HOVERLA», has given Ukrainian hromadas 585 containers for separated waste collection. Cardboard units were given to 65 hromadas from Poltavska, Rivnenska, Zhytomyrska, Lvivska, Odeska, Volynska, and Zakarpatska regions, which participated in School of municipal waste management (MWM), arranged by Ekoltava.

The containers are for glass, plastics, and paper. Representatives from hromadas have installed them in schools, village and urban councils, centers of administrative services, libraries. The amount of collected recyclables is monitored by authorized persons and reported every two months. These recyclables are then transferred by hromadas to specialized enterprises for further recycling.

Oksana Choba, chief specialist in ecology and nature resources, Obroshynska village council, Lvivska region:

«We’ve set these cardboard containers in educational institutions, because we want enlightenment first of all and teach children how to sort. They will share this positive experience with their parents, their families. It is when you learn to do something well as a child, it emerges into a habit. Plus through educational institutions, through their students, we’re able to cover bigger public with ideas of sorting, and inform more widely about the importance of waste segregation».

Dmytro Bihun, head, UE «Velykobychkivske manufacturing housing utility enterprise», Zakarpatska region:

«In our hromada, the containers were set in schools. Children are interested in this. As we worked on installing, they already stared and decided where to put certain kinds of waste. Now we cooperate with school principals to dedicate a special lesson or extracurricular hour to waste sorting, so that children understand better what kinds of waste are eligible and how to do proper sorting».

For higher competence in proper sorting and training good habits in citizens, hromadas have received informational posters, designed within the project.

Implementing separated collection of waste in hromadas is a legal clause pointed at efficient use resources and preservation of environment for future generations. This measure regards well-calculated approaches to technical and logistic support of waste management system. Through segregation, it is possible to pick out stuff eligible to renewal (recycling) from that non-eligible to recycling. This helps to decrease amounts of trash dumped in landfills and thus mitigate negative impacts on environment.

We remind that project «Support of local waste management system» has been launched in summer 2023, pointed at higher competence of representatives from local self-government bodies in effective waste management.
