School of Municipal waste management is launched in Ukraine

On October 5, 2023 in Ukraine there was launched School of Municipal waste management (MWM). NGO “Ekoltava” runs it within project “Support of local waste management system”, promoted by USAID project “HOVERLA”.

School of MWM is an educational project that helps hromadas to acquire proper knowledge to be able to develop Roadmaps which become a ground for Local waste management plans. 

For training, there were selected representatives from local self-government bodies in 65 hromadas of 7 Ukrainian regions, that are partners of USAID project “HOVERLA”: Poltavska, Zhytomyrska, Rivnenska, Volynska, Lvivska, Zakarpatska, Odeska. The students will gain theoretical knowledge during online lectures and use it while completing home assignments. 

Representatives from hromadas that have applied for improvement of efficient local waste management, but do not belong to partners of Project, can join and listen to theoretical course.

Among School mentors there are leading Ukrainian experts in waste management: Yuliya Makovetska, Viktor Hudenets, Tetiana Omelyanenko, and Dmytro Laznenko.

The curriculum contains 4 thematical modules that regard to aspects of waste management: planning on the level of territorial hromadas, general considerations on local plans, methodology, arrangement of process of planning, compliance of local and regional plans, technical and financial basics of planning of waste management system, and other. 

Also, the students may attend to additional thematical lectures that speak about local target programs, strategic planning in hromadas, pricing, efficient interactions, morphological inspection of waste, and inter-municipal cooperation.

After training at School of MWM, its participants will for three months develop their own roadmaps for local waste management plans. The graduates will present their works during the concluding event in Lviv. Authors of 7 best Roadmaps get sets of large composters for their hromadas.

A reminder: Project “Support of local waste management system” points at higher competence of local self-government bodies in efficient management of municipal waste. Regions that take part in the project – Rivnenska, Poltavska, Lvivska, Odeska, Zhytomyrska, Zakarpatska, and Volynska.

NGO “Ekoltava” has 10-year experience of interaction with hromadas, particularly in the field of waste management, climate change adaptation, and sustainable energy development.
