The project “Supporting the waste management system at the local level” has launched in Ukraine
22.08.2023“Ekoltava”, under support of USAID project “HOVERLA”, has started work on new project “Support of implementation of local waste management system”, which stipulates improvement of local self-government bodies’ competence related to efficient municipal waste management. The participants will represent 65 hromadas of 7 pilot regions: Rivnens’ka, Poltavs’ka, Lvivs’ka, Odes’ka, Zhytomyrs’ka, Zakarpats’ka and Volyns’ka.
On July 9, 2023, the framework law “On waste management” has taken effect. It has launched an important reform of the branch, which should bring Ukraine closer to European standards in managing solid municipal waste. Interaction and co-operation on all levels – national as well as regional and local ones – is highly important condition of reaching effective implementation of this reform. This is why the project concentrates on higher competence of local self-government in strategic planning and efficient management in the branch, and on delivering relevant information on the reform to hromadas’ population.
The representatives of participating hromadas will increase their awareness and skills related to waste management while studying at School of municipal waste management (MWM). Side by side with skilled mentors – Ukraine’s top experts in waste management – the students will learn to develop roadmaps, that is, the ground for future Local plans of waste management.
The study at MWM School lasts from October till December 2023. And at the beginning of the next year students will work on their own roadmaps and later on Local plans of waste management. The authors of 7 best Roadmaps receive the sets of large composters for their hromadas.
