On July, 10th “EKOLTAVA” have completed the third informational press-tour, acting within the project “Link: Poltava region sustainable development centre”.
This time we and the media have approached Novi Sanzhary district and urban village Novi Sanzhary.

District centre Novi Sanzhary is known in Ukraine as the best one concerning accomplishment and civil order. This is why “EKOLTAVA” have chosen it for inspection.
As a part of tour we talked with top leaders of district and district centre. The mayor Inna Koba and her deputy Valentyn Ivashyna told us about implementing environmental projects in Novi Sanzhary together with improvement measures.

Cleaning the bed of river Vorona and coast protection of river Vorskla have lasted for three years and was financed from region budget.
“River level decreases by 1,5 metres per year, that is why we are strongly concerned to have water level regulating composition on the border of two districts, Novi Sanzhary and Kobelyaky. This should stabilize water level” – says Yuriy Bovkun, chief of Novi Sanzhary inter-district department of water industry.

The experience of Novi Sanzhary in eliminating landfills turned out to be an interesting issue. For example, in 2008 thanks to local government and community a former spontaneous trash dump became an oak and basswood park named «Parents and children of the third millenium»

A visit to solid wastes dump in village Zachepylivka deserves special attention. The Head of district administration Serhiy Bul’bakha names it as the only landfill from all over Poltava region that is legalized by housing communal household and ecological inspection.
The field has the square 2 hectares, it is believed to contain 60 thousand tons of trash, its capacitance make possible to accept wastes from all the district for five years. At present here is being dumped garbage from five urban settlements, six more communities are to be attached until the end of current year.

Beginning from 2015 Novi Sanzhary district state administration together with German partners GIZ (German community of international cooperation) and  DESPRO project promote bringing the capacity of the landfill to all-district one. Despite this, mr. Serhiy notes: “The high task of ours, besides improvement of infrastructure is changing people’s mentality regarding wastes treatment.”

A task of “EKOLTAVA”, then, is spreading the respective knowledge and skills so that the amount of wastes in everyday life would decrease, and available resources would be consumed reasonably. That’s why, as a part of “DESPRO” a waste sorting contest was initiated among the district schoolchildren. Over a tonne of plastic was collected in a month and taken to recycling. Earnings were directed to demands of participant schools.
Project manager, CSO “EKOLTAVA” – Mykola Ryabyka have presented to the participants of tour the manual “Village without garbage”. Articles and commentaries gathered in it describe in details the process of running informational enlightening campaigns regarding wastes treatment – within the district as well as urban settlements outside it.

So this is how is possible to gain substantial shifts already – by united efforts, shared desire of community and authorities to recreate and develop their native region.

“EKOLTAVA” thanks the participants of the tour: top leaders of Novi Sanzhary urban village council Inna Koba and Valentyn Ivashyna, Head of Novi Sanzhary district state administration Serhiy Bul’bakha for organizational support.
